25 March 1945: An infantry squad advances through the rubbled remains of the city of Ludwigshafen, Germany. At the moment this photo was taken, all organized resistance had ceased, but snipers were still active in some of the burned-out buildings, and mortar and artillery fire was still arriving from German units near Mannheim, on the other side of the Rhine River. Note the traffic sign indicating the way to Mannheim in the lower right of the photo.
