24 March 1945: Infantrymen of Item Company/399th Infantry Regiment advance aboard an M4A4 Sherman tank near Ludwigshafen, Germany. After the massive Seventh Army breakthrough of the brittle German defenses in the Palatinate which began on 15 March (Operation UNDERTONE), speed was of the essence if German forces were to be denied the opportunity to reorganize and make another stand. Whenever possible, the infantry advanced mounted on whatever was available, whether tanks, trucks, or even captured enemy vehicles.
