Technical Sergeant Charles F. Carey, Platoon Sergeant, Anti-Tank Platoon, 2d Battalion, 397th Infantry Regiment, in a photo taken before deployment to the ETO. Sergeant Carey was a Regular Army NCO who had been in the Army since well before the Second World War, and was highly respected by his men, his fellow NCOs, and his superior officers in Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 397th Infantry. Killed during the 100th's tenacious defense of the village of Rimling and its environs in early January 1945, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership and personal intrepidity in stopping the attack of the 17th SS-Panzer-Grenadier Division in Operation NORDWIND.
