In the Midst of Mayhem, Music: Holbach, France, late December 1944.

Holbach, France (six kilometers west of Bitche), late December 1944. After relieving elements of the 44th Infantry Division's 71st Infantry Regiment, medics from 2d Battalion, 398th Infantry Regiment look on as their battalion surgeon, Captain Joseph R. Rich, MD of Albuquerque, New Mexico (foreground), serenades them and a French family with a recently-liberated baritone horn. The other soldiers in this photo (also attached to 2d/398th) are PFC Yves Fontenot of Ville Platte, Louisiana (behind Dr. Rich) and PFC Keith Winston of Westgate Hills, Pennsylvania. The letters PFC Winston sent home while assigned to the 100th Infantry Division were collated and published as a book, V...- Mail, by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1985.

Photo by Technician 3d Grade Doug Smyth, Medical Detachment, 398th Infantry Regiment.
