Spring, 1945. Elements of Combat Team 398 pass through a German town during the drive into southwestern Germany. The effects of the Division's artillery fire can be seen on the building in the center rear of the photo. The M5 Stuart light tank coming up the street is probably from Company D, 781st Tank Battalion.
Photo by Technician 3d Grade Doug Smyth of New Milford, Connecticut, who served as a medic attached to the 2d Battalion, 398th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division. This photo was taken with a Kodak 127 Vest Pocket Folding Camera, which Doug carried in a pouch on his pistol belt. The negatives were developed using captured German chemicals.
