Raon L'Etape

Raon L'Etape, in the French Department (State) of the Vosges, lies within the ancient -- and oft-disputed -- province of Lorraine. On the banks of the Meurthe River, located on the western slope of the High Vosges range, this was the first major city seized and liberated by the 100th Infantry Division from the Germans in World War II. In the city hall there is a plaque commemorating the Division's baptism of fire there.
