Duty Sublime

Just before the Germans launched Operation NORDWIND. . .

"One morning up around Bitche, Company I/398th Infantry Regiment was catching hell from a Jerry mortar barrage and a big hunk of shrapnel found a comfortable place in the "derriere" of First Sergeant Marvin L. Larsen.

"Larsen, a Chicago Swede with a singular devotion to duty, crawled through the barrage for about a half mile, reached his company CP, made out his morning report, then turned himself into the battalion aid station, where he was rushed to an evacuation hospital."
